Introducing Miss SA 2014 semi-finalists

Miss SA 2013 Marilyn Ramos

The search for Marilyn Ramos's successor has began. Yesterday the 33 semi finalists vying for the honour of being crowned the queen of the nation were presented to the press. Ramos who won the title in December last year has had to hold the title for 3 months longer. Sun Internation who own the prestigeous event decided to move the annual event, which is normally staged in December, to March 2014. The bold move was made so that the pageant is more internationally compatible. The new Miss South Africa will represent the country at Miss Universe and Miss World pageants next year. Mobile operator Cell C was announced as the presenting sponsor. The judges tasked with selecting the most desirable woman in the land are Radio and TV personality Anele Mdoda, Dj and artist Black Coffee and magazine editor and style icon Pnina Fenster.

10 things you probably didnt know about our former State President

1. Mandela’s tribal nickname is “Rolihlahla,” meaning “Troublemaker.” Other accounts translate Rolihlalhla to mean “to pull a branch from a tree,” which, of course, is something only a troublemaker would do. It was his teacher, Miss Mdingane, who gave him the English name “Nelson,” much to the relief of journalists everywhere when he became famous. 2. Mandela was expelled from university after less than a year. After finishing boarding school, Mandela headed to Fort Hare Missionary College. Less than 12 months later, he was expelled from college for helping to organize a strike against the white colonial rule of the institution. One might call this foreshadowing. 3. The United Nations decreed his birthday as Mandela Day. In 2009, the U.N. declared Mandela’s birthday, July 18, as Mandela Day to mark his contribution to world freedom. The holiday calls on individuals to donate 67 minutes to doing something for others, reflecting the 67 years that Mandela had been a part of the anti-apartheid movement. 4. Mandela is often referred to as Madiba, his Xhosa clan name Mandela is a member of the Thembu, a Xhosa clan, and is often referred to by his clan name, Madiba. It is a sign of the incredible diversity of people and languages in South Africa. Our nation has 11 official languages. 5. Mandela’s father had four wives, and Nelson is one of 13 children. Mandela’s father, a local chief and councellor to the Thembu king, died from tuberculosis when his son was 9. Before that, he fathered 13 children by four wives, four boys and nine girls. After his father’s death, Mandela was put under the guardianship of Jongintaba, the Thembu regent. 6. Mandela has received more than 250 awards for his accomplishments. Among these awards is the shared 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with F.W. de Klerk, the last president of the apartheid government of South Africa (he too is widely credited as an instrumental force in ending apartheid). Additionally, Mandela has received more than 50 honorary degrees from international universities worldwide, became the first honorary Canadian citizen in 2001, and received the last Lenin Peace Prize from the Soviet Union 7. Stevie Wonder dedicated his 1985 Oscar for “I Just Called to Say I Love You” to Mandela. After Stevie accepted his award in honor of Nelson Mandela, the government-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation banned Stevie’s music from the airways. It wasn’t until Mandela was elected in 1994 that Stevie was finally allowed back in South Africa. 8. Mandela outlived his two oldest sons. Mandela had six children, but tragically lost his two oldest sons. Thembi died in a car crash at age 25. Mandela was in prison at the time of the death and was unable to attend the funeral. Another son died of AIDS in 2005 at age 54. While Mandela’s administration was criticized for not doing enough to fight the AIDS epidemic in South Africa, he established the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 1999 following his retirement to help fight the spread of AIDS. 9. Mandela ran away from home at age of 19. When his guardian tried to arrange a marriage, Mandela ran away from home in 1941 and headed to Johannesburg. He began to work as a night watchman at Crown Mines, but was fired after it was discovered that he was the Thembu regent’s runaway. 10. Mandela spent his first night after being freed from prison in Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s home. Tutu had his helpers prepare his own favorite meal of chicken curry, rice and green salad, followed by rum raisin ice cream and custard

We will always love you, WHITNEY!

Just a little over a year ago, on the eve of the biggest and most anticipated music awards ceremony – The Grammy Awards, the world was stunned to learn that Whitney Houston had died. The news sent shocking waves and dominated the headlines around the world. It is with a heavy heart that I write this report. Everyone who is close to me knows how much I love Whitney. I literally grew on her music, which was influenced of course by the constant presence of her music in our home. My mother used to play her music whilst doing the chores around the house and would sing along. Her favourite track was the duet Whitney made with Teddy Pendergrass – Hold me.

Born on the 09 August 1963, in the state of New Jersey, Whitney began her musical career in church. She was only 19 years old when music legend Clive Davis discovered the unique talent that made her so special. He wasted no time and arranged for Whitney to appear on the Merv Griffin show. This appearance would catapult Whitney into stardom and was a clever move to introduce her to the world. Whitney sang “Home” – a heartfelt performance which left no doubt of her impeccable vocal ability.

Houston is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 . This kind of success and honour only belonged to greats such as The Beatles and Elvis Pressley before. The first 3 albums were a huge success. The debut album was self titled “Whitney Houston”, followed by “Whitney” and then “I am your baby tonight”. Whitney dominated the pop music world, with her incredible voice and dynamic stage performances. However she was not done. In 1993 Whitney starred alongside Kevin Costner in a motion picture “The Bodyguard”. The movie and the soundtrack were a huge success, probably elevating Whitney to the peak of her career. She later married bad boy Bobby Brown and they had daughter Bobbi Kristina. She subsequently starred in other movies, Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife. Her duet with Mariah Carey from the animated movie, “The Prince of Egypt” earned both these megastars an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The movie, Sparkle, would be the last movie she would make.

At the dawn of the new democracy in South Africa in November 1994, Whitney became one of the first major superstars to visit the country. The tour was called Whitney – the concert for the new South Africa. She met the former State President Nelson Mandela. Proceeds from the shows were all donated to carefully selected local children charities, including the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund.

Whitney struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, an addiction that would ultimately take away her life. In a tell-all interview with Oprah, after her divorce from Bobby Brown, Whitney was honest enough to admit she can never say that she has kicked her habit entirely and that she was taking each day as it comes. I find these unfortunate circumstances are almost irrelevant considering what she gave the world. The Voice – as she was known had been nominated 26 times and won 6 Grammy Awards. The song One Moment In Time became the official soundtrack for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the Superbowl was epic. It is one of those performances that should be put into a time capsule.

She may be gone but Whitney’s legacy will live on. Her voice tugged at the heartstrings of all her fans. She was a music DIVA, a legend in her own right, and certainly one of a kind and there will never be anyone like her.

Miss Universe 2012 was recently held in Las Vegas and attracted a bevy of 89 beauties from all corners of the world. The contestants participated in a variety of pre-pageant events which included the The Presentation Show. Here the 89 contestants are judged by a separate panel of judges to narrow down the field to the top 15 semi-finalists. The 16th spot in the semi finals is for the most popular contestant. She is voted in by the public.

Top 5

The show was hosted by Andy Cohen from Bravo and E!'s Giuliana Rancic. Amongst the judges were Scott Disick, Jimena Navarette and Lisa Vanderpump.

South Africa was represented by the stunning Melinda Bam. A huge media favourite. Leading up to the finale she displayed a competitive spirit that is rarely seen on these kind of competitions. How she never progressed past the top 10 will always be a mystery.

At the conclusion of the 2 hour live telecast,Miss USA, 20 year old Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe 2012 by the outgoing queen, Leila Lopez of Angola. This is the 8th time that USA has won Miss Universe. The last time was 15 years ago when Brooke Lee won when the event was staged in Miami Florida.
